Service provided
BHMHS is a publicly funded area Mental Health Service providing high quality mental health services across the Loddon Campaspe and Southern Mallee region.
We work in partnership with the patient, family and carers to assist and support their recovery and personal goals. Care is inclusive and respectful of each person’s values, beliefs culture and own unique experience. Find out more about our services below.
Inpatient services
Admission to an inpatient unit may occur for example if someone requires: Change in medication and would benefit from close monitoring, the symptoms of the illness experienced are severe and the person is not coping in their usual environment, the person is at risk and generally wellbeing is at risk, the inpatient treating team will strive to work in with the person experiencing mental illness, their family and carer to provide high quality care with a strong focus on recovery orientated practice.
| Adult Acute Unit | A 35 bed short-term acute inpatient unit that provides intensive therapeutic treatment for people living in the Loddon Campaspe Southern Mallee region aged 16 to 65 years. For more information click here. |
| Extended Care Unit | A 20 bed secure inpatient unit providing medium to long term inpatient treatment and rehabilitation for patients who experience unremitting and severe symptoms of a mental illness for persons aged 18 to 65 years For more information click here. |
| Older Person’s Unit | A 20 bed unit which provides a mental health inpatient service to those over the age of 65 (but not exclusively) across the Loddon Campaspe Southern Mallee region. For more information click here. |
| Parent Infant Unit | A 5 bed mental health inpatient unit for parents and infants. We assess and treat the mental health of the primary caregiver and support/strengthen the attachment relationship between parent and infant. For more information click here. |
Residential Servies
Residential Services (sometimes called Rehabilitation) gives people a live-in option to be able to access mental health and or drug and alcohol treatment within the community setting.
Residential facilities provide a supportive therapeutic environment to assist a person to work on their recovery goals. The programs vary according to the needs of the person and Mental Health Services provides the following programs: Youth Prevention and Recovery Care (YPARC), Adult Prevention and Recovery Care (APARC), Community Care Units (CCU), Dual Diagnosis Unit (DDU).
Target population
The service is offered throughout the Loddon Campaspe Southern Mallee region across all age groups.
Eligibility Criteria
Any person who is either experiencing mental illness or possibly appears to be.
Referral pathway
The Mental Health Regional Triage Service (MHRTS) is the central intake point for BHMHS. MHRTS offers an initial assessment of a person (typically over the phone or face-to-face) to determine the type and urgency of the response required from mental health or other services.
