C4C Bendigo values the long-standing partnership with our local Aboriginal Community Controlled Organisation (ACCO), the Bendigo and District Aboriginal Cooperative (BDAC).

This project provides important opportunities to support local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander families to reconnect with each other and culture following the COVID pandemic.

Bendigo & District Aboriginal Co-operative

Project Aims

A key element of C4C Bendigo’s Strategic Plan focuses on addressing social and cultural isolation Aboriginal families with small children can face, which was exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic.

Connecting community means connection to culture, this is a priority for C4C Bendigo as we are committed to working to make a difference for Aboriginal people in our community.

Project aims include:

  • Facilitate a strong connection to culture
  • Build community resilience and recovery post COVID-19 pandemic social restrictions
  • Facilitate strong connections to social supports and community by connecting families with young children to each other and BDAC
  • Culturally safe playgroup supports parents and close kin to develop positive relationships and development

Project Activities

Project activities include:

  • The annual BDAC NAIDOC Family Day (formerly BDAC NAIDOC Children’s Day).
This has become a well-established and much-loved community event.
After a forced hiatus in 2020 and 2021, this event returned with a bang during NAIDOC festivities in 2022. The event was held at the Bendigo Exhibition Centre on the 6/7/22. An estimated 3000 community members attended, enabling families and community members to reconnect after COVID restrictions, learn about community resources and access an enormous array of fun, engaging activities.
  • Wonyotjarrapil Playgroup. This is a culturally safe playgroup which supports parents and close kin strengthen attachment and grow positive relationships with their children. It is held every Wednesday during school terms. It is for Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander families residing in the Greater Bendigo region with children aged 0-5. The playgroup is free to access and no referral is needed.
